HR and H&S for small businesses - What's the point?

Members of the Goring Gap Business Network, Carolyne Wahlen (Gap HR Services) and Rebecca Russell (Goode Management) held this informative and helpful seminar on Tuesday 28 October at the Shillingford Bridge Hotel, Wallingford. The participants found out exactly what the point was of not only being aware of legislation in these two areas, but that it was painless and made sound business sense to apply it.

I wanted to take this opportunity to offer you a place on the next seminar. This seminar gives business people such as yourself a good grounding in the important issues of HR and H&S. It enables you to highlight a potential risk to your business, and to become an even more valuable resource to them by pointing senior managment in the right direction for solutions.

We aim to show small businesses such as yours that there is a point to not only being aware of legislation in these two business areas but that it is painless and makes sound business sense to apply it.

This is also an extremely relevant seminar for those employers who don't consider themselves to be proper employers, e.g. even if they "only" employ a nanny.

Subjects covered included IR35 and subcontractors, what needs to be done through the first year of employing staff, and the H&S requirements as you grow your businesses.

Even the sole traders in the audience left with four action points to implement as soon as they were back in the office!

“The best value seminar I have been to. I came away with four action points, and I don’t even have employees!” Ms G.A., Voice Coach, sole trader

I didn’t realise the H&S implications of me working on other people’s premises – my eyes have been opened!” Ms C.S., Landscape Gardener, sole trader

I thought our contracts and policies were robust until I heard how the law has changed recently. Our information is five years old and we will need to redo everything to comply and reduce our risk of getting sued!” Ms C.F., Office Manager, business with 16 employees

HR - you know more than you think you do!

Tuesday Business Club, Shillingford Bridge Hotel on 10 June 2008 6.30pm onwards

If you weren’t there on 10 June you missed THE event of the year – HR as you have never seen it before! We had about 13 people, split into two teams competing against each other in three rounds of easy and not so easy HR questions. The winners got chocolate buttons and Haribo sweets (the losers did too – with fluffy HR, no-one is allowed to lose!). Everyone came away a lot sweeter in the tooth and much more knowledgeable about the HR aspects of hiring your first employees.
